On the day before Halloween -- October 30th -- I stopped into Roxy's Cabaret, kitty corner from my apartment building, to attend a combination drag show, dinner, costume contest,

and Bingo. It was my first visit to Roxy's which opened up three years ago. I had never been to a drag show before, so it turned out to be quite an eye-opener. The first thing I noticed when I stepped into the large dining area on the first floor were people wearing fanciful, colorful outfits which were later judged in a costume contest. The winner turned out to be a young man dressed up as a championship high school volleyball player who wore a fancy, sparkly jersey festooned with flashing lights and the name of his high school in bold letters. My favorite costume was worn by a middle-aged woman who represented the Merry Widow. She wore a sleek, long, black dress and a black Jackie Kennedy style hat with a
veil. Roxy's dining room/show room had a large bar at one end and a number of tables, seating about eight people at each one.
The main event of the evening was a series of Bingo games costing $10.00 each, the proceeds of which went to support MPR's rock station -- The Current. I found out that Roxy's featured regular Bingo nights and drag shows to raise money for various non-profits in town. Some of the night's Bingo games had weird names such as Butt-hole Bingo (in which you placed your Bingo numbers in a square with a hole in the middle) and Six-pack Bingo (where you used six numbers in two rows).
For me the highlight of the evening was watching the two drag queens Monica and Nina, who called out the Bingo games. Both were dressed to the nines and wore lots of heavy make-up to disguise their true ages. Either one could easily have won the costume contest hands down! They interspersed the Bingo games with lots of wisecracks and off-color humor. For example, whenever the number 69 was called, there were lots of laughs. In the course of the evening, Monica and Nina also lip-synched some rousing, show-stopping songs. They did a fantastic job of keeping the sold-out audience amused and entertained!
The evening's erotic atmosphere was enhanced by a number of very attractive young women in the audience. One of them, sitting at my table, could have been a dead ringer for Taylor Swift. I noticed two other drop-dead, gorgeous, well-endowed young ladies at a nearby table whose revealing dresses left little to the imagination!
I ordered a delectable meal of a vegetarian omelette with hashbrowns topped by a dessert of a raspberry milkshake. I purchased two ten-dollar Bingo cards and came to within one number of winning the final cover-all game. Thinking I had won, I shouted out "BINGO!" But it turned out I got one number wrong. However, to my surprise and delight, I was awarded a neat consolation prize at the end of the evening. It turned out to be a two-disc set of the best-of-the-Current vinyl album.
I'm really glad that I took the risk of attending this event at Roxy's. I found the evening to be quite entertaining and delightful. I loved the wholesome, funny, and erotic atmosphere. At one point, I even got inspired to give one of the drag queens some money during one of their showtunes.
